The 1958 Corvette was the first major redesign of the popular model. It added considerable size to the 57 corvette being about 9 inches longer and 2 inches wider. Some people felt the design was too flashy, but nobody complained about the performance. However, the previous year, the Automobile Manufacturers Association came out with an “anti-racing” policy so the 58 corvette performance was down-played in all their advertising.
While some lamented the flashy exterior, the interior design met with rave reviews on the 1958 corvette. The instrument panel was redesigned and was met with enthusiastic approval.
With a base sticker price of $3591, the 58 vette was one of the few domestic cars to make a profit that year. They sold 9168 cars that year which was a significant increase from the year before.
You can find them on the market today. But top flight restored with original parts will run you in the neighborhood of $180,000+. Models that need a lot of work can be had for $30,000.
